Emerald or Beryl?
A facinating question. And one of occassional controversy. Emeralds, geologically speaking, are beryls. A true emerald is by definition green, but since they are formed geologically in the same fashion "red emerald" is an accepted term for this rare and beautiful stone. The rasberry red and pink tones are attributed to manganese and trace amounts of iron, chromium, and calcium.
Rarest gem in the world. . .
It is also known as "red beryl" and "bixbite" (so named after it's discoverer Maynard Bixby). There is no stone in the world more rare than a red emerald. Gem quality specimens of a quantity that is considered anywhere near "commercial" can only be found in the Violet Claims of the Wah Wah Mountains in Utah.
"Red beryl is estimated to be worth 1,000 times more than gold and is so rare that one red beryl crystal is found for every 150,000 diamonds." -Carl Ege
